The core team has laid out the plan for WordPress 5.7, the next release of the WordPress platform. It is targeted for release in March 2021. Matt Mullenweg will be the release lead.
As was laid out in the annual State of the Word keynote a few weeks ago, 2021 is all about Full Site Editing, the second phase of the Gutenberg project. The core team is currently planning four WordPress releases for 2021 (5.7, 5.8. 5.9, and 6.0). If they can deliver on this aggressive plan, it will have significant impact on how WordPress sites are developed and updated. We strongly recommend you allocate time to understand Full Site Editing and its implications for your own sites and business.
The following items were laid out as the focus for WordPress 5.7:
- Update WordPress Core to include current releases of the Gutenberg plugin.
- Gutenberg: ship additional blocks, refine the UI, add tools for themes and design, and continue working on the widget screen.
- Continue work on auto-updates and jQuery.

We will be testing WordPress 5.7 beta versions and release candidates. If you are on an Outcome Labs WordPress Monthly care Plan, your site will be validated against the final release candidate and the production release before it is updated. We will also be testing the Site Editor as new capabilities are released in updates to the Gutenberg plugin.
