WordPress 6.3 “Lionel” Released

WordPress 6.3 Lionel

The WordPress core team just announced the release of WordPress 6.3 with the moniker “Lionel”. It is named after Lionel Hampton, the celebrated American jazz artist. A prolific jazz vibraphonist, pianist, and percussionist, Hampton gained notoriety working in harmony with greats from Charles Mingus to Quincy Jones and as bandleader of the eponymous Lionel Hampton Orchestra. His artistry and charitable work have been recognized with a Grammy, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the National Medal of Arts.

The focus of WordPress 6.3 was on the WordPress Site Editor. The Site Editor enables you to use the WordPress Block Editor across all areas of your site. You can design the underlying layout templates for posts, pages, and custom post types. You have full control of your site’s headers, footers, 404, and search page. To use the Site Editor, you have to use a block theme. There is an expanding library of block themes being created by the WordPress developer community. Our team will be doing a series of posts exploring the capabilities of the Site Editor and how to migrate to a block theme over the next few months.

There are a number of other significant enhancements to the platform even if you are using a “classic” theme. Our Outcome Labs team will be doing follow-ups posts on many of these once we have deployed the release on our sites. Please follow along here and feel free to contact us if you have any questions. If you are a client and on a WordPress Care Plan, our team will be verifying your site with the new release. We will notify you when we are planning to deploy the update.
